Digging up the Past


Pukekohe Intermediate School found a time capsule while building the new Management centre. The time capsule was buried next to the memorial stone. The memorial says this stone from the old primary School was relaid on the 17 of March 1973 to make centennial of primary education in Pukekohe. The time capsule was opened on the 17th of April 2008, by Gary Sweeney, the School principal assisted by Billie Paterson, Mathew Bright and Lachlan Woods-Davidson from Room 23.
The time capsule was a glass preserving jar containing the New Zealand herald from 1910 and 1973, a booklet which has names of the families and community and a letter. The letter said The 1910 New Zealand Herald letter was found under this foundation stone when the old primary School was pulled down in 1945 and has been replaced along with a present day New Zealand Herald when the stone was relaid in March 1973. Gary Sweeney (school principal) says “I was very surprised at the date on the newspapers.”
Pukekohe Intermediate School are going to refill the new time capsule with newspapers from 2008, also anyone in the school was open to put a letter or picture in the capsule.¬
